In a major escalation, Ukraine deployed long-ranged U.S. ATACMS missiles to a weapons depot in Bryansk, Russia, becoming the first confirmed case of these missiles’ use in the Russia-Ukraine War.
Ukrainian officials have confirmed the use of U.S.-supplied ATACMS missiles but continue to refrain from disclosing any details about the operation, including the number of missiles launched and the total damage done.
The attack was described as part of a wider effort to neutralize Russian military logistics and infrastructure.
ATACMS missiles can strike targets up to 300 kilometers (186 miles) away and are equipped with GPS guidance that ensures accuracy.
These capabilities now enable Ukraine to hit previously unreachable Russian targets, such as logistics hubs and ammunition depots.
While President Zelenskyy has not specifically addressed this particular attack, he has emphasized that Ukraine now possesses the ATACMS system and views it as a way to reinforce its national security as the conflict progresses.
He stated that such military power is essential in Ukraine’s efforts to defend its territories and nullify Russia’s aggression in this war.
The strike aligns with Ukraine’s current strategy of targeting high-value Russian assets to weaken their supply lines.
In response, Russian officials condemned the strike, with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov calling it a “new phase” of Western participation in this ongoing war.
Lavrov’s statements were followed by accusations that the United States directly enabled these attacks through its provision of advanced weapons, suggesting that this event could lead to major retribution from Moscow.
Despite these threats, the Biden administration recently approved the delivery of ATACMS missiles to Ukraine as military aid.
The decision came after many officials in Washington D.C. claimed that weapons such as the ATACMS are necessary to reduce the power gap between the two nations.
Furthermore, western leaders such as the Prime Minister of the U.K. have dismissed Russia’s claim of escalation and emphasized their dedication to the defense of Ukraine.
Military analysts suggest Ukraine’s access to ATACMS missiles will lead to a decisive moment in the Russia-Ukraine war.
They note that these missiles will enhance the country’s ability to strike Russia’s key supply lines and critical infrastructure, thus diminishing Moscow’s capability to sustain the war.
However, analysts also warn that Ukraine’s ability to strike into Russian-controlled territory could lead to increased Russian retaliation against Ukrainian military bases or heavily populated cities.
The use of the ATACMS missiles coincided with the 1000th day of the war, which shows no end in sight, as both sides continue to increase and advance operations.
While Ukraine works to reclaim occupied territories, Russia has focused its resources on launching drone and missile strikes on Ukrainian cities.
The introduction of advanced weapons like the ATACMS underlines the evolving technological nature of both sides in the war.
This complicates the global effort to diplomatically end the conflict, as both parties currently still pursue military solutions.
As world leaders prepare for Russia’s response to this development, the full impact of the deployment of ATACMS missiles in Ukraine remains unclear.
