On June 30, 2025, 20th Century Studios announced the release of their long-awaited sequel to the iconic film, The Devil Wears Prada.
The Devil Wears Prada was first released to the world in 2006, and its huge success continues to be influential after 19 years. The film’s influence stems from its career lessons and the reality of a fashion industry, showing behind-the-scenes of a perfect looking fashion world. The film is based on a novel written by Lauren Weisberger in 2003, which delves into her experience as the assistant of Anna Wintour—the past editor-in-chief of Vogue . Anna Wintour, widely regarded as the most influential figure in the world of high fashion, is a British-American who had been an editor-in-chief of Vogue for four decades. The Devil Wears Prada follows the story of Andy Sachs, a college graduate, working as an assistant of a well-recognized fashion editor, Miranda Presley. To keep her job, Andy needs to change how she styles. Through this journey, she earns faith from Miranda but loses her personal valuables. The film features well-known actors such as Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and others. Anne Hathway is an American Actress who began gaining popularity with the film “The Princess Diary.” Despite the attention the film received, she was the ninth choice to play Andy in the film.
Upon its initial release, viewers were praising the film’s blend of fashion, romance and humour. The production budget was $35 million, but when released, the film earned more than nine times the budget, earning $326.6 million worldwide. It went on to be nominated for Golden Globes and two academy awards. According to the medium, there were life lessons taught in the film such as, “sacrifices are inevitable: Success often comes with a price…Dress the way you want to be addressed or as the person you aspire to be.” Audiences empathized with Andy when she chose to sacrifice her relationship for her career. As Andy became more committed to her job, her friends started to distance themselves from her, reinforcing one of the film's central messages that “Sacrifices are inevitable”. The fashion in the movie still serves as an inspiration today, such as Andy’s iconic layered Chanel necklace, her tweed cap and the revival of fashion in the early 2000’s. As mentioned, the two main brands featured in the film were Prada and Chanel. The film served as a marketing vehicle for these brands, captivating a global audience and younger generations. Following the announcement of The Devil Wears Prada comeback, $38.6 million have been generated just for media impact value between June 30 and July 29 alone. Gabriel Hearst’s brand gained $1.4 million just because of its association with the production. This is more than 60% of the media value it received from the Fall/Winter 2025 Parish Fashion Show Week. On November 12, 2025, the trailer for The Devil Wears Prada 2 was released, further exciting audiences for the 2026 premiere. With every new revelation, fans are growing increasingly impatient to see what the movie would look like returning after 20 years.
