The Emmy Awards are considered the highest honors in the American broadcasting industry, often referred to as the “Oscars of Broadcasting.”
This prestigious achievement record provides even greater significance to the awards earned by ‘Beef’ at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards.
‘Beef’ is a dark comedy revenge story that explores the escalating feud between a man and a woman who become entangled in reckless driving.
In the series, Danny, one of the protagonists of this drama, is a struggling Korean-American repairman with no future and no money, living a miserable and depressing life.
One day, Danny gets into a heated argument with a white Mercedes SUV owner, Amy, who is a Vietnamese-Chinese American and also lives a troubled life filled with self-destructive tendencies.
Although both protagonists become furious towards each other and drive recklessly, they continue to get entangled with each other for some reason in the drama.
Written by a Korean-American director and acted by several Korean actors, the story deals with Korean immigrants who had to endure discrimination and injustice against Asians while living in America.
Furthermore, the drama incorporates many Korean-style materials and elements, such as the use of the Korean language and the background that shows Korean cities, reflecting the personal experiences of the director Sung Jin Lee as an immigrant.
Sung Jin Lee shared his thoughts about ‘Beef’ in his acceptance speech of the Best Picture Award: “I am grateful to those who watched this show and talked about their experiences. It felt like confirmation that nothing was wrong.”
Moreover, he continued, “Sometimes I feel like the world is trying to divide people. When you live in a world like this, there are moments that you don’t have the possibility of being loved. The best thing about ‘Beef’ was the people who loved me unconditionally.”
Steven Yeon also expressed gratitude and shared his reflections onDanny, the character he played in the drama.
He admitted, “Honestly, there were days when I wanted to judge Danny and ridicule him. But Andrew Cooper, the photographer, told me, ‘Don’t give up on Danny easily.’”
Steven Yeon concluded his speech by saying, “Judgment and shame are very lonely things, but compassion and grace bring us together.”
Meanwhile, in addition to its Emmy success, ‘Beef’ has won various awards including being a box office hit, in recognition of its high production quality and acting skills.
At the Golden Globe Awards, it received three awards: Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Actress.
