Pokémon LEGENDS Z-A, the newest title in the popular global game series Pokémon, will be released on the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 platforms on Thursday, Oct.16, 2025.
The game’s setting is Lumiose City, a reinterpretation of the world introduced in Pokémon X and Y in 2013.
In this version, the city is being redesigned as a future redevelopment hub where people and Pokémon coexist, providing players with fresh adventures against the backdrop of change and renewal.
Within Lumiose City, wild Pokémon roam freely in the “Wild Zone.”
At night, a “Battle Zone” emerges through holographic projections, transforming the city into an arena for trainers.
In particular, the nightly Z-A Royale tournament is a core competition between trainers.
This nightly competition has players striving for A-rank status with partner characters Guy or Tawny, which are automatically assigned based on appearance.
Nintendo confirmed that two editions of the game will be released: one for the current Switch console and another for the Switch 2.
The Switch version is the standard edition, playable on both Switch and Switch 2, but without graphical enhancements.
Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is a version that actively utilizes the latest hardware performance and features improved graphics, smooth frame rate, and wider viewing distance.
It is compatible with Switch 1, but performance upgrades will not be applicable.
Existing owners of the Switch version will have the option to upgrade to the Switch 2 Edition through a paid upgrade path.
Meanwhile, Nintendo has also announced a free performance update for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet on June 5, 2025, coinciding with the Switch 2 launch.
The update added more realistic Pokémon movements, enhanced visibility, and higher frame rates.
One of the most talked-about features of Pokémon LEGENDS Z-A is the return of Mega Evolution, a mechanic that was removed after the ninth generation of Pokémon titles.
Originally introduced in Pokémon X and Y, Mega Evolution allows certain Pokémon to temporarily evolve into more powerful forms during battle, often with striking new designs.
Many of the fans have been waiting for its comeback, and Nintendo has responded by revealing seven new Mega Evolutions since September.
Among the highlights is the announcement of Mega Raichu X and Mega Raichu Y, evolutions tied to the franchise’s beloved mascot, Pikachu.
These new forms will be available as part of a DLC pack for Pokémon LEGENDS Z-A, adding to fan excitement.
One more reason that the fans are expecting Pokémon Legends Z-A is the new battle system.
Traditionally, Pokémon battles have been turn-based, with players choosing moves, items, or substitutions each round.
In contrast, Pokémon Legends Z-A introduces real-time battles where trainers can move their Pokémon to dodge attacks.
Each move will now have a cooldown period that introduces a new layer of strategy.
Many fans welcome this fresh approach, but some have expressed concerns that the live battle system strays from the series’ traditional style and may feel more difficult than the classic format.
With its innovative battle system, return of Mega Evolution, redesigned Lumiose City, and platform-specific editions, Pokémon LEGENDS Z-A is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated titles of the year.
