Open AI, a company that is famous for the creation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatting bot ‘ChatGPT’ has partnered with the robotics firm ‘Figure,’founded in 2022, to develop a humanoid robot software.
The official website of the humanoid robot ‘Figure’ has introduced their creation as the first commercially-viable autonomous humanoid robot.
The humanoid robot was designed to address severe labor shortages and improve safety in hazardous occupations.
According to YouTube channel ‘Figure’, Figure 01, the humanoid robot is now equipped with the Artificial Intelligence software provided by Open AI, allowing it to analyze a question and have a conversation with humans.
Figure 01 is capable of analyzing and providing things according to the instructions given by humans, such as providing an edible thing such as an apple, after hearing the question of ‘May I have something to eat?’.
In addition to that, Figure 01 is also capable of walking with two legs with the maximum speed of 1.2m/s, and using its two hands to pick up materials, just like humans do.
One of the main collaborations of Open AI’s software and Figure’s hardware were shown in the video by Figure 01 picking up the trash and talking about how he analyzed the question and took it into action.
Figure acknowledges Open AI as a significant contribution to their goal of ‘developing next generation AI models for humanoid robots’.
The company sees their robot to be used in manufacturing, shipping, and logistics, where labor shortages are the most severe.
They are already starting to put their dreams to action. They have already initiated collaborations with BMW, a German vehicle company to collaborate on humanoid robots and manufacturing cars.
Both companies are expecting to see a decrease in accidents happening in the process of manufacturing.
Despite the humanoid robot market not yet being the biggest market in the world, the huge potential of the future market size is making huge investments happening to these companies including ‘Figure’.
According to ‘CNBC,’ ‘Figure’ has raised $2.6 billion from investors including Jeff Bezos (Founder of Amazon), Nvidia, Microsoft, Intel, and Open AI.
The company is expecting to see even more rapid development with their humanoid robot ‘Figure 01’, with huge technology experts and companies investing in their invention.
There are already several prominent companies that are starting to invest or invent humanoid robots which can help the labor or our future daily life.
Humanoid robot companies include PAL Robotics, Alphabet Inc (company which made Google), Ubetch, Tesla, and much more.
“Humanoid robots require expensive components such as actuators, motors and sensors to function,” Annie Palmer from CNBC remarked.
The collaboration of humanoid robots and technology based companies will increase, making our labor and daily life more effective and easier.
