Genesis has officially unveiled the GV90, its first full-size flagship electric SUV, adding a new electric model at the top of the company’s vehicle lineup. The grand reveal took place on August 19 at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco. The GV90 will serve as Genesis’s flagship SUV, introducing several technologies not previously offered by the automaker.

The GV90 draws inspiration from the Neolun concept that Genesis first introduced in 2024.

While concept vehicles often lose their more unusual features before reaching production, Genesis has retained several of the Neolun’s most distinctive ideas.

The vehicle will be offered in both regular GV90 and more luxurious GV90 Neolun versions.

A prominent feature of the GV90 Neolun is its distinctive coach-door system, called the “Neolun Arch Gate.”

The rear doors are hinged at the back and open in the opposite direction of conventional doors.

The Neolun Arch Gate is the world’s first independently operating hidden B-pillar coach-door system.

Instead of using a conventional fixed pillar between the front and rear doors, the structural pillar is built into the doors themselves.

This innovative design allows both doors to open independently while creating an unobstructed entrance when they are opened together.

Because the B-pillar is crucial to a vehicle’s structural integrity, Genesis says it reinforced the doors and body to maintain structural strength and passenger protection.

The GV90 also introduces several new features inside the cabin.

When the vehicle is parked, the front seats can rotate 180 degrees, transforming the interior into a lounge-style arrangement, allowing passengers to face each other.

A pop up OLED display can also rise from the dashboard as needed.

Rather than giving each interior feature equal attention, these features reflect Genesis’s broader effort to make the cabin function differently when the SUV is parked.

Korean culture has played an important role in the GV90 design.

The exterior draws inspiration from traditional Korean moon jar pottery, emphasizing simple curves and removing unnecessary design elements.

Luc Donckerwolke, President and Chief Creative Officer of Hyundai Motor Group, stated that the GV90 embodies Genesis’s belief that “true luxury is revealed not through addition, but through reduction.”

Underneath its luxury features, the GV90 is powered entirely by electricity.

It features the largest battery ever installed in a Hyundai Motor electric vehicle, a 123.5 kilowatt hour battery.

Genesis claims that the seven-seat GV90 can travel approximately 500 kilometres on a single charge.

With a 350-kilowatt fast charger, the battery can charge from 10 to 80 per cent in approximately 22 minutes.

Performance is another significant highlight of the GV90.

Its front and rear electric motors can generate a combined maximum output of 490 kilowatts, and about 657 horsepower, and 800 Newton-metres of torque.

Beyond raw performance, the company has also equipped the SUV with multi-chamber air suspension and rear-wheel steering, technologies intended to affect how the large vehicle rides and handles.

The GV90 also includes 12 airbags, including what Genesis describes as the world’s first Roof Airbag.

During a serious rollover incident, the airbag is designed to deploy across the glass roof to help protect passengers.

As Genesis enters its second decade as an independent luxury brand, the GV90 signals a major step for the company.

By combining electric performance, cutting-edge technology and Korean-inspired design, Genesis is positioning its new flagship SUV to compete at the top of the growing luxury electric vehicle market.
