On February 8, 2025, an unimaginable scene unfolded in the waters of Chilean Patagonia when a 24-year-old kayaker, Adrián Simancas, was momentarily swallowed by a humpback whale before being spat back out.

The incredible moment, captured on video by his father, has since gone viral, drawing global fascination and prompting discussions on marine safety.

Simancas and his father, Dell, were kayaking in the Strait of Magellan near Bahía El Águila, a region known for its breathtaking landscapes and abundant marine life.

As they paddled through the calm waters, an extraordinary encounter occurred.

Without warning, Simancas suddenly found himself in the jaws of a massive humpback whale that had surfaced beneath him.

“When I turned around, I felt on my face like a slimy texture; I saw colors like dark blue, white, something approaching from behind that closed… and sank me,” Simancas recalled.

“At that moment, I thought there was nothing I could do."

In a heart-stopping moment, the whale closed its mouth around him—only to release him seconds later.

His father, who was only a few meters away, could do nothing but watch in shock as the event unfolded.

Fortunately, Simancas resurfaced unharmed, though shaken.

His first priority was making sure he and his father could safely return to shore, as the freezing waters of Patagonia posed a serious risk of hypothermia.

Encounters like this are exceedingly rare, but not impossible.

Marine biologists explain that humpback whales are filter feeders, meaning they lunge through the water with their mouths wide open, scooping up krill and small fish before filtering them through their baleen plates.

Experts believe that Simancas was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The whale, focused on feeding, likely failed to notice the kayak until it was already in its mouth.

Once it realized the foreign object wasn’t food, it instinctively spat it out.

While these incidents are uncommon, they are not unheard of.

In 2021, a similar case occurred off the coast of Massachusetts, where a lobster diver was briefly trapped in the mouth of a humpback whale before being ejected.

Since the video surfaced online, millions have watched the shocking footage, comparing it to the biblical story of Jonah.

While some see it as an astonishing survival story, others are using it as a warning about the risks of getting too close to wildlife.

Local authorities in Chile have since urged kayakers and boaters to maintain a safe distance from whales, especially in feeding areas.

The Strait of Magellan is a prime habitat for humpbacks, and while whale-watching is popular, experts stress the importance of respecting these creatures’ space.

Experienced guides emphasize that observing these magnificent creatures safely requires patience, knowledge of their behavior patterns, and a willingness to prioritize their well-being over photo opportunities.

As more people seek adventure in nature, this event serves as a crucial reminder: the ocean is unpredictable, and its giants deserve respect.
