In the early hours of the first day of 2025, a pickup truck ran into crowds killing 10 people and injuring 35 people during a New Year’s celebration in New Orleans street.
The tragedy has left the nation in shock, raising concerns about public safety and the persistent threat of terrorism.
The incident occurred at 3:15 AM local time and the truck was driven by a 42-year-old man named Shamsuddin Jabar, a former military serviceman of the U.S.
He drove the truck into a packed crowd and was killed during a firefight with the police at the scene.
Investigators later uncovered an Islamic State (IS) flag and two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in the vehicle, suggesting that the attack was a deliberate act of terror.
Law enforcement agencies including the FBI are now delving into the background of Jabar for potential ties to IS or other terrorist organizations. Authorities are also examining his mental health history and military service record to find his motivations for the attack.
They are also further examining whether he acted alone or had an accomplice.
Jabar’s family and neighbours described him as introverted, saying that he became isolated in recent months.
According to his family, he had personal turmoil including two divorces and financial difficulties which may have radicalised him.
The tragedy has sparked criticism regarding inadequate safety measures.
Reports say that vehicle barriers, commonly used to prevent incidents, had been temporarily removed for maintenance.
Experts say this allowed the truck to breach the event.
Witnesses at the scene described it as chaotic. One survivor recounted how the truck was so fast that there was no time to react and people were screaming and running.
President Joe Biden condemned the attack, calling it an inhuman act of terror.
He also extended his deepest condolences to the victims and promised full support to authorities in their investigation.
Additionally, he travelled to New Orleans to meet the victims’ families.
New Orleans mayor, LoYoya Cantrell, announced heightened security measures across the city as a response to the incident. She vowed to review public safety protocols to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The incident has reignited debates about the balance between celebrations and security, critics argue that New Year’s celebrations are fatal for the community but the safety of the public should remain the top priority.
They claim the temporary removal of vehicle barriers highlights flaws of the celebration.
Communities across the United States have expressed solidarity with New Orleans and the families of the victims.
Communities hold vigils for the victims, and many organizations are assisting the families of the victims.
As investigations continue, the incident reminded the threat of terrorism and the need for strong security measures at public celebrations.
Authorities are working to uncover the truth and prevent future attacks.
At a time of celebration and new beginnings, the attack has shadowed New Orleans. However, the city remains steadfast in its resolve to protect its people.
