On May 22, a Chechen teenager was arrested on suspicion of planning an attack during the upcoming soccer game in the Paris Summer Olympics of 2024.
The alleged attack was planned to occur in the St. Etienne area, located in central France, during the Olympic football events.
Authorities have officially classified the suspected plot as an “Islamist-inspired” attack.
Although the teenager has not been proven guilty, the arrest was made as a precaution due to France’s heightened security alert in anticipation of the Olympics.
The nation has been on high alert, with approximately 45,000 officers on duty throughout the area in case of any suspicious activity.
They are on watch for everyone except for those who have tickets or are local residents of the area.
The teenager, identified as an 18-year-old male, has not had his full identity disclosed to the public.
He faces charges related to terrorist conspiracy and is currently in pre-trial custody.
The Ministry of the Interior stated that the suspect was “actively preparing an attack against the Geoffroy-Guichard Stadium [in Saint-Étienne] during the football games. He intended to attack spectators as well as security forces and die as a martyr.”
This arrest marks the first reported and thwarted attack on the Paris Summer Olympics, with some referring to it as the “first foiled attack against the Olympic Games.”
In addition to this incident, three other threats have been prevented since the beginning of 2024.
The arrest follows a recent case last October, where a 20-year-old Chechen killed a teacher in northern France after pledging allegiance to the Islamic State group, otherwise known as IS.
Historical and ongoing threats have led to increased security measures and a noticeable decline in spectators, highlighting the persistent risk associated with high-profile events like the Olympics.
Due to the continuous threat of attacks, security efforts have intensified to ensure the safety of attendees at the Paris Summer Olympics.
The authorities are committed to preventing any incidents and protecting both local residents and visitors during this global event.
