From June 24, many reports were that wild dogs were seen roaming around the English Edu City in Daejeong-eup, Seogwipo-si, Jeju-do.
The emergence of these wild dogs in search of food has instilled fear among residents as they enter residential areas.
Concerned citizens have reported wild dogs venturing into apartments and scavenging through garbage dumps, suggesting they have become more desperate for food.
In response to the numerous sightings and growing concerns, officers were dispatched to the area with tranquilliser guns and trap nets to capture the wild animals.
Nevertheless, their attempts failed as the animals escaped the capture.
After a few days, some citizens reported witnessing three wild dogs holding the corpse of a deer, raising alarms about the potential threat to other wildlife.
Even though the deer was large, it could still not withstand the attack of three aggressive wild dogs.
This incident has frightened the citizens even more.
In an effort to increase their chances of successful capture, the officers set up specialised capture frames.
Despite their best efforts, the wild dogs continued to escape from their attempts.
The situation has left the residents of English Edu City living in trepidation, particularly those with young children.
A citizen shared one’s experience of seeing two wild dogs following a junior student.
Fortunately, the accident happened near the apartment complex, and the student’s father was near the student.
The citizens who witnessed the accident continued to watch them until the student and his father safely went home.
Therefore, they could safely go home, calming the wild dogs not to follow them.
After sharing the experience, the citizen advised young children only to walk alone once the wild dogs were captured or disappeared.
The aggressive behaviour of wild dogs has increased concerns about potential attacks on people and other animals, making families feel unsafe.
Solving this issue requires a collaborative effort from both the authorities and the local community.
Citizens must be aware of the potential dangers caused by these wild dogs and should be educated on how to deal with them when they meet face to face.
Authorities also need to be aware of this issue and try their best to minimise the damage and harm caused by these animals.
In the past, Kang Hyeong-wook, a famous businessman and dog trainer in South Korea, talked about the seriousness of wild dogs on Jeju Island in a TV show.
In the show, he assumed that there would be more wild dogs than pet dogs.
He said that abandoned dogs all over Jeju have recently led to serious wild dog problems through breeding.
Recently, wild dogs, which lacked food, came down to villages where people live, causing accidents such as dog bites to occur more frequently.
In conclusion, wild dogs roaming freely in Jeju-do's English Edu City has instilled panic among residents.
The difficulty of capturing these animals has increased concerns about safety and potential wildlife threats.
Therefore, both authorities and local citizens need to work together to find a feasible solution to solve this issue.
Most importantly, Edu City citizens should be vigilant and report wild dogs whenever they see them to address this incident more quickly and efficiently.
