In recent days, the news of the missing submersible has swept the headlines of the news industry - Named the Titan, the submersible was meant to be touring the old Titanic for 7 hours and return to the surface on June 18, 3:00 p.m. (EST)

However, the submersible did not succeed in reaching the surface ever again - but was found as debris in the nearby North Atlantic, with the five people tragically crunched by an implosion.

The spotlight was focused on the tragedy of the unfortunate and wealthy individuals and its haunting connection to the old Titanic's fate.

However, the fatal design failures of the Titan were veiled to the public when the cause of this submersible failure was highly responsible to the company, Oceangate.

Long before the tragic event, using carbon fiber, a highly un-experimented material for marine technology, in the design of Titan raised worries within the U.S. Navy.

The characteristics of carbon fiber are not studied deeply, and whether it can endure pressure or crackdown in the ocean was not tested enough.

The famous submersible that James Cameron used to tour the Titanic had many safety-cautious designs with already experimented materials.

It was proven safe by James Cameron, who dived using the submersible 33 times.

However, unlike the Deepsea Challenger used by James Cameron, the design of the submersible by OceanGate has many problems.

OceanGate, the maker of the company, brought more suspicion after the news that an employee was sued for bringing up confidential information about safety - revealing the company did not pay to make a window that holds up to the pressure while touring the Titanic.

This news was issued  in 2018, giving different warning signs if the Titan was safe enough to tour the Titanic, a relic of the past on the bottom of the surface, more than 12,000 feet down.

The few passengers boarding the submersible explained  ‘slow communication through text messages’ and being ‘nowhere near the Titanic.’

A renowned writer and producer, Mike Reiss, said, “The sonar, the computers, the lights all stopped working. We went back to the surface immediately,”

The deceit of the company does not end here - OceanGate’s CEO Stockton Rush continuously claimed the involvement of NASA, Boeing, and Washington College in developing the submersible.

However, NASA, Boeing, and Washington College fully denied their involvement in the development of the submersible.

Washington College stated their only connection was providing testing tanks between 2016 and 2022, for Oceanology research.

NASA also spoke out, saying they agreed on the materials of the submersible but no partnership in the development and manufacturing of the submersible.

As most of OceanGate’s words prove to be a fraud, voices are rising about tighter regulation for the use and approval of marine technology.

More than just marine regulations, voices are going out about how extreme tourism among the wealthy should be regulated - criticizing their overly adventurous ideals and dimming their common sense.

Although the tragedy of the missing submersible sadly wasn’t stopped, this event will be marked in history, evoking people more about the dangers of un-experimented technology.

Whether it will change the regulations is unknown, but it will remain a great lesson to stay away from the tragic Titanic - and let the tragedy have its rest.
