Tragic incidents such as the one involving the attempted suicide of two teenage girls while livestreaming on an online forum for the depressed, known as the ‘Depression Gallery,’ serve as reminders of the challenges faced by today’s youth.
Throughout the past few years, mental health issues among teemagers have been disscussed as a serious matter.
On May 2023, the world was shocked when news emerged about two teenage girls, aged 15 and 17, attempting suicide while broadcasting it on their social media accounts.
Thankfully the girls were stopped right before their action, but the incident highlighted the severity of mental health issues among Korean teenagers.
The two girls were members of "Depression Gallery"- an online community forum where individuals can share their feelings of depression and seek support from others going through similar struggles.
However, this forum has been accused for promoting self-harm and suicide, leading to concerns about its impact on vulnerable teenagers.
Addressing the severity of teenagers’ mental health issues, the incident at Hannam Bridge highlighted the high rate of depression among Korean youth.
According to National Youth Policy Institute (NYPI), at least one out of ten teenagers in Korea experiences depression, anxiety, or thoughts of suicide.
Over 17% of the students are exposed to serious mental health problems, and more than 16% of them are showing possibility of attempting suicide.
The most common mental health disorders affecting Korean teenagers include anxiety, depression, eating disorders, self-harm, substance abuse, and ADHD.
These conditions portray significant concerns regarding the well-being of young individuals and require immediate attention and support.
Various causes contribute to the high rates of mental health issues among Korean teenagers.
One major cause is the intense academic pressure and high expectations faced by students in Korean society.
The pressure to excel in education can lead to immense stress and anxiety among young individuals.
The influence of social media also plays a big role as it causes self-comparison and low self-esteem among teenagers.
The constant exposure to idealized images and unrealistic standards on social media can negatively impact their mental state.
Moreover, relationship problems with family and friends further perpetuate the challenges faced by teenagers.
Conflicts at home or school can lead to feelings of isolation and loneliness, adding to the burden of their mental health struggles.
These factors exacerbate stress levels, creating an environment that is detrimental to their mental well-being.
The consequences of mental health issues on young individuals are widely affecting them.
The consequences include well-being, compromised academic performance, strained relationships, and an overall diminished quality of life.
If the teenagers struggling with mental disorders do not receive the appropriate support, these struggles can endure until adulthood, affecting their future prospects.
The mental health crisis among youth needs proper attention and collective efforts.
Increasing awareness and reducing stigma through education is crucial.
Additionally, schools should provide mental health support, implementing early intervention and prevention programs, and fostering open conversations.
Promoting positive coping mechanisms equips teenagers with the necessary tools to navigate their challenges effectively.
By prioritizing youth mental health, we can create a supportive environment that fosters well-being and resilience.
It is imperative that society supports initiatives and organizations that are working towards promoting mental well-being among young people.
Together, we can make a positive impact and ensure a healthier future for our youth.
