AI name reading system crashes mid graduation ceremony

This graduation season, Glendale Community College’s AI-powered name-reading system malfunctioned mid-ceremony on May 15, 2026, preventing graduates from hearing their own names during the ceremony. 


This sudden crash not only confused the audience, but also outraged several graduates and families.


As a massive milestone in one’s life, college graduations are an important and necessary moment for a student and their family. 

The stage walk alongside the announcement of each student’s name is an essential part of this moment, providing recognition.


This incident has since sparked widespread controversy beyond the college community, raising the question of whether institutions should utilize automated systems for such a human event that requires dignity, accuracy, and personal connection.


The automated system, designed to announce each graduate’s name and display it on a screen as the student crossed the stage, was intended to streamline the ceremony.


However, the new system proved to be deficient, suffering from a lag mid-ceremony and resulting in: out of sync names, wrong names displayed on screen, and skipping several names.


The ceremony was paused at least twice while college officials attempted to troubleshoot the problem.


Videos from the event showed confused graduates crossing the stage as the system announced incorrect names or remained silent.


Eventually, the system was shut down and the remaining students walked in silence to receive their diploma as families watched.


After the ceremony, college president Tiffany Hernandez apologized for the sudden breakdown, saying: “I'm gonna have to disappoint many of you. We will not be able to walk the stage a second time in order to have the [correct] name on the screen … I'm so sorry.”


Hernandez further explained that students could not walk the stage again due to the fact that they had already turned in their name cards.


The apology was soon met by several boos, yells, and audible jeers from the audience after the mention of the newly implemented AI system.


Despite the apology, several college students remained upset after the ceremony.


Graduate Grace Reimer stated in an interview with the AZFamily: “I would have liked a little more thought to have gone into it rather than pushing something as simple as reading some names off to an AI device.”


Families described the ceremony as ”awkward” and “impersonal,” saying the automated name reading felt cold and impersonal.


In response to this immediate pushback, the overseeing institution of Glendale Community College, Maricopa Community Colleges, reversed their decision of prohibiting graduates from walking their stage.


On the same day, affected graduates were called up, this time by a human announcer, and walked across the stage once again.


However, despite being given the opportunity to re-do their walk, nearly half of the graduating class left the ceremony.


Clips of the ceremony and issued apologies have since sparked outrage on social media.


Platforms such as Youtube, TikTok, and Instagram have become overridden with netizens, enraged by both the usage of AI in the ceremony as well as the college’s response to the malfunctions.


Rumors under videos of the graduation read: “I am ENRAGED by this nonsense. Their faculty can’t even be bothered to read the names to congratulate the hard work of these students? They should be deeply ashamed.” and “Whose idea was it to use AI to read the names?”


Claims that the apology letter was created by AI have also been circulating online, however the college soon denied such allegations in a statement. 


In the same statement, the college confirmed that they would discontinue the use of AI-name reading software, and would return to traditional human announcers for all future graduation ceremonies.
