On April 3, 2026, tensions between Iran and the United States escalated sharply after Iranian forces shot down two U.S. military aircraft, an F-15E Strike Eagle and an A-10C Thunderbolt II, over Iranian territory.

This incident marked the first confirmed case of a manned U.S. jet being shot down in Iranian airspace.

According to The New York Times, the A-10C, which only had a single pilot onboard, “crashed near the Strait of Hormuz” around the same time as the F-15E.

The F-15E was carrying two airmen at the time of the incident.

One of the F-15E crew members was recovered on the same day and received immediate medical attention.

The A-10C pilot was also successfully rescued within hours.

However, the second F-15E airman remained behind enemy lines for over a day.

He managed to evade capture in mountainous terrain at an elevation of approximately 7,000 feet, surviving with only a pistol, a communication device, and a tracking beacon.

U.S. forces maintained continuous surveillance of his location throughout the ordeal.

According to CNN, his position was monitored 24 hours a day.

Jennifer Kavanagh, director of military analysis at Defense Priorities, told BBC News that aircrew are “highly trained for such situations,” including surviving with limited resources, avoiding detection, and quickly moving away from ejection sites.

The high-stakes operation required meticulous planning due to active Iranian efforts to locate the missing airman.

Iranian authorities reportedly offered rewards to civilians who could help identify or capture the U.S. service member.

On April 5, U.S. officials confirmed the successful rescue of the second F-15E airman.

He was transported to Kuwait for further medical treatment, BBC News reported.

U.S. President Donald Trump mentioned that the rescued colonel, despite sustaining injuries, would be “just fine,” and described the result as “an Easter miracle.”

Regarding the rescue, Iranian state-affiliated media continued to undermine the success of the mission.

Iran’s military headquarters, reported through the Tasnim News Agency, asserted the destruction of multiple “enemy American aircraft in the southern Esfahan region” and denied the occurrence of any successful extraction.

On the contrary, U.S. officials and Western media reported that both downed aircrew members were safely recovered.

The operation also elicited international reactions.

Officials in Israel publicly praised the operation, expressing joy and describing the mission as heroic.

According to CNN, Israel’s Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich posted on Telegram, “The heart of every Jew and every Israeli is filled this morning with joy over the safe rescue of the two American aircrew members in a heroic operation on Iranian soil.”

The incident also affected global energy markets due to its proximity to the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically vital waterway for oil shipment that had been the center of the current tensions between the two nations.

While both sides have signaled restraint, the situation remains highly volatile.

The successful rescue operation stands as both a tactical victory for the US and a reminder of the potential risk of further escalation.
