Even with the national Children’s Day in Korea is coming up, child abuse rates in South Korea are sky high.
On February 7th, 2023, a boy was pronounced dead in a hospital with signs of physical abuse from his parents.
This was made known through the multiple bruises visible throughout his body.
The couple, the boy’s father and his stepmother, was arrested.
His stepmother was charged for child abuse homicide, and the father suffered the consequences of habitual child abuse.
According to experts, approximately 5 children die due to child abuse daily around the world.
Many cases are similar to the one mentioned above.
In the United States, more than 600,000 children suffer abuse annually.
This is only a small portion of the countless cases that occur every day.
The most surprising fact about this is that the majority of these cases, around 80%, are in relation to the parental figures of the children themselves.
There are a variety of possible explanations for this.
One reason may be that the parent is not ready or unprepared to care for a child.
This is common in many cases, as it causes the parent to mistreat their kid out of the excuse that they do not know what to do.
Another reason for this may be due to misguided teachings of the parent themselves.
For instance, many may have been led to believe that disciplining a child through violence should be supported due to their own childhood.
In fact, child abuse can have numerous effects in the child’s future.
Those who experience this are far more likely to commit crimes, develop mental diseases, etc.
There are a multitude of consequences that follow a victim of abuse.
Despite these facts, not much has been done to prevent this issue.
Laws have been passed for the punishments of the perpetrators; however, these will not solve the issue.
Numerous children who are abused often feel afraid and unsafe to tell another person about the abuse leaving them to endure the pain by themselves, with nobody to talk to.
After all, it is impossible to keep an eye on everyone in the world; there will always be some cases that are unknown and kept hidden.
However, no matter how much the penalty is, or how sever the punishment will be, these things do not account for the pain and the torture children go through every year.
Although isn’t a new issue, it’s still an important one to cover and raise awareness on.
Children’s day should be a day in which parents spend time with their children, appreciating them.
While not all parents commit this act of abuse, it can’t be said that it is uncommon.
Many children globally suffer through this every year worldwide, not just in South Korea.
Children’s day is celebrated on May 5th every year in Korea.
It first originated in the 1920s, when students felt the need to bring attention to young children such as themselves.
Today, it is known as a day in which parents are able to rest from work and take time to appreciate their kids.
Many spend time with their children by going to amusement parks, beaches, etc.
However, this does not stop the fact that child abuse is still being committed by numerous people all around the world.
Even though not all countries have a day to celebrate their kids like Children’s Day, it should still be noted that they should always be shown appreciation by their peers.
